Over the last
several years there has been a resurgence of a pest that mainly our grandparents
had heard of, or possibly seen. Bed bugs, a nemesis from times past have been
emerging with a frequency that has the pest industry alarmed and scurrying to
keep up.
The primary reason
for the surge in activity is the shelving of the chemicals which brought about
control, due to safety considerations.
The good news is the
industry has begun to develop a new generation of control measures that have
shown a great deal of effectiveness.
The first line of
defense in an Integrated Pest Management strategy is prevention, meaning
exclusion. Avoid any second hand bedding or clothing. If you have family members
living away in dormitory style living accommodations, quarantine their personal
items until they can be thoroughly inspected, upon their return.
If the worst happens, and you discover the insects or experience bites or blood
spots on your bedding, do not try and deal with it yourself. Contact a pest
professional immediately. Bed bugs are a very difficult pest to bring under
control if left unchecked for a protracted period
